WHY WE C.A.R.E.
During your stay, you will probably come across some of Eleuthera's resident animal population. The dogs you see are known as "Potcakes." The Royal Bahamian Potcake Dog gets its breed name from the scrapings left over in the bottom of pots used to cook rice and beans (known locall as peas and rice), which have traditionally been fed to these dogs by locals in and around the Caribbean.
C.A.R.E. stands for Caribbean Animal Rescue Effort, a US-based 501(c)(3) organization created to raise funds through grants and donations from the public to assist animal rescue organizations and groups throughout the islands of the Bahamas and the greater Caribbean. Funding efforts support, but are not limited to, construction of animal clinics and shelters, providing fee-optional mobile veterinary services, sponsoring spay and neuter projects, public education and other logistical support including adoption off the islands when applicable.
